Construction update from Bungamati, Nepal

(June 5, 2015)

Our partners Britain Nepal Medical Trust on the ground constructing a number of toilet blocks since devastating earthquakes ravaged the country of Nepal.

Based on discussions with the local users committee and the municipality, BNMT have selected a new location for the toilet in Bungamati. The local users committee has been set up and the design approved. BNMT plans to start construction in mid-June.

The main reason for moving the site was that the previously proposed area was situated in the middle of badly damaged houses and construction would have been delayed by a further three months. Another exciting prospect for us with the new site was that it is adjacent to a local community school and school children will be able to use the toilet.

There will be about 300 individuals from the school using the toilet on a daily basis

The new site will be located in the vicinity of a temporary medium term settlement for 30 families (approximately 150 individuals) and a local community run school. Most of the buildings of the school “Tri Ratna Cooperative School” was badly damaged by the earthquake and at present classes are being held in temporary structures. There are 250 students currently enrolled in the school. After including teachers, there will be about 300 individuals from the school using the toilet on a daily basis.
